Our Christmas Members Evening was a great success. From beginning to end it was an entire delight. The entertainment was superb, the pies delicious, the quiz challenging but not impossible, and the company excellent.

The evening was attended by some sixty members and guests. Once we were all settled with our drinks, we were treated to a splendid performance from Penny Walker, Pam Luxton, Ted Gooda, and John Pounder of The Coal Hole by Alex Plowman (who was with us in the audience). Pizza was then served to all, before another great performance by John Pounder and Pam Luxton (with Will Gooda somewhere under a newspaper) of two sketches written by John. The evening concluded with answers to the table quiz and the raffle. What a wonderful evening, seeing so many old friends coming together at last.
A virtual Do Your Own Thing: more than 20 members and friends enjoyed listening to songs from the Kelland family, including one recorded by Amy. This tested our technical skills initially, but our perseverance was rewarded by a brilliant performance from this talented young lady. Mike Nicholson also delighted us with a couple of songs, one of which linked to the daffodil and the hope of better things to come – very timely. The talent of some of the society’s writers was also appreciated. We viewed Jean Trew’s comic sketch Plenty of Choice, ably performed by Pat Arculus, Emma Simon and Jean herself. This was later followed by Rob Pearson’s sketch, Emperor. Rob performed this, a particularly noteworthy achievement, as he played both characters. Another moment of note, was Ewan Dunlop’s reading of his first-ever poem, The Five-Barred Gate – well done, Ewan. Another of our actors, Janet Methley, thoroughly entertained us with a unique performance of a scene from A.A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh, joined by a group of forest friends (who I note have not paid their membership!). I am still chuckling now, as I think of this sketch – thank you, Janet. We also had a short quiz on Film Theme Music to test out the little grey cells. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
